Turban, J.L., Dolotina, B., Freitag, T.M., King, D., Keuroghlian, A.S. (2023) Age of Realization and Disclosure of Gender Identity Among Transgender Adults. Journal of Adolescent Health.

This study examined the amount of time between a person realizing their gender identity and sharing this with another person. Among people who first understood their gender identity during childhood, a median 14 years elapsed until they shared this with another person, highlighting the work that must be done to combat stigma related to gender diversity. The study also found that among transgender adults, it is not uncommon to not come to understand one's transgender identity until after the onset of puberty.

Using a large dataset of over 27,000 transgender and gender diverse adults in the United States, this study found that access to gender-affirming hormone treatment during adolescence was associated with better mental health outcomes in adulthood.

This manuscript, written with legal scholar colleagues from Harvard Law School and Yale Law School, provides an overview of recently proposed state bills that aim to criminalize the provision of gender-affirming medical care for adolescents with gender dysphoria, explaining why such proposed legislation is both medically dangerous and legally precarious.

This manuscript reviews recent econometric causal inference studies that show the ways in which upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decisions have the potential to dramatically impact the mental health of sexual and gender minority Americans.

Turban J.L., Loo, S. S., Almazan, A. N., Keuroghlian, A.S. (2021) Factors Leading to “Detransition” Among Transgender and Gender Diverse People in the United States: A Mixed-Methods Analysis. LGBT Health.

This study of over 20,000 transgender and gender diverse Americans found that it was not uncommon for adult transgender people to have "de-transitioned" at some point in the past, and that the vast majority of the time, this "de-transition" was driven by external factors like harassment and stigma, rather than a change in gender identity.

This study was the first to link access to pubertal suppression for adolescent gender dysphoria to lower odds of suicidal ideation among transgender adults.

Turban, J. L., Beckwith, N., Reisner, S. L., & Keuroghlian, A. S. (2020). Association between recalled exposure to gender identity conversion efforts and psychological distress and suicide attempts among transgender adults. JAMA Psychiatry.

This study was the first to link exposure to gender identity conversion efforts (attempts to force transgender people to be cisgender) to adverse mental health outcomes, including suicide attempts. Exposure to such practices during childhood in was associated with an even more dramatic increased odds of suicidality.

This clinical perspectives manuscript provides clinicians with a framwork for understanding pediatric patients who "de-transition" or choose to discontinue gender-affirming medical interventions. It focuses on exploring both internal and external factors to better understand and support such patients.
